Awen: Educational Games

At Awen I was Chief Technical Officer and lead developer for over 40 educational multimedia CD-ROMs. We won a number of international pre-school and nursery awards and gained two BAFTA nominations and two Celtic Media Festival awards.

We covered a wide variety of curriculum areas and normally produced print materials to go along with the disks, so found ourselves getting into book publishing as well.

Most of the disks were bilingual Welsh and English, and were aimed at children between the ages of 3-9. They sold into schools, primarily for interactive whiteboard use. A handful of the disks used branded characters, but for the most part we were creating our own IP.

I created the overall frameworks for these disks along with common components and APIs, user logging and tracking, build systems and installers. The individual activities were normally developed by the rest of the team.

We started off using Director and Lingo, targeting Windows only. Latterly all of our work was done in Flash and the Flex SDK, targeting Windows, OSX and Linux.
